Mehehe

Ethno ambient duo

Mehehe explores the roots of Polish village music and folk-magic traditions, drawing on rhymes, tales, and songs preserved in ethnographic records and in the memories of rural elders. Their music is inspired by the same mysterious forces of nature — vast, terrifying, and awe-inspiring — that once gave rise to rituals, spells, and protective charms. Through sound, they seek to capture fleeting moments: the fear before a storm, the wonder of morning fog, the hidden language of things unspoken.

Their compositions weave together trance-like Polish folk rhythms, natural sounds, and storytelling, creating an atmosphere both intimate and otherworldly. The name Mehehe originates from one of the oldest spells: laughter, once used to ward off fear.

Since their debut in 2018 as prizewinners at Poland’s leading ethno music festival, Mehehe has released their acclaimed album Ciemnienie / Darkening (AAUU Records, 2019), awarded 3rd place for Best Polish World Music Album. In 2020, they were selected for Keychange, the international initiative supporting women in music.

They have performed across Poland and internationally at festivals including Ethno Port Poznań, World Music Festival Bratislava, and Globaltica, as well as in unique venues such as a cemetery at Brussels’ Hide & Seek Festival and a synagogue during Poland’s Wertep Festival. Beyond the stage, Mehehe also composes for theatre, film, and audiobooks, and leads wild voice workshops.
