GANNA

Ukrainian folktronica

GANNA is Ganna Gryniva — a Ukrainian singer, composer, and producer based in Berlin. Since 2013, GANNA has been researching and reinterpreting the ancient folklore of her homeland. Today, she is considered “one of the most impressive singers and musicians on the European jazz and world music scene” (Ö1 Radio, AT). Inspired by research travels to various regions of Ukraine, she breathes new life into old songs and combines them with experimental, electronic, and improvised music. GANNA is actively committed to promoting Ukraine’s cultural heritage internationally.

In October 2025, GANNA released her new solo album UTOPIA, which was featured on national German TV ARD. The national newspaper taz wrote: “The vocal acrobat, magician on the electronic set, and musician on unusual instruments has been collecting old Ukrainian folk songs for a long time.” Her debut solo album KUPALA (2023) was included in the list of “Best Ukrainian Albums of 2023” by Ukrainian radio station Slukh.Media and music magazine MIXMAG, and was named “New European Sound 2024” by LIVEUROPE.

GANNA produced the album UTOPIA with London-based producer Tomáš Kašpar. The guest musicians on the album shape the soundscape of UTOPIA: Laura Robles – percussion, Ambrose Akinmusire – trumpet, Maksym Berezhnyuk – traditional flutes, Marian Friedl – cimbalom, Julian Sartorius and Andi Haberl – drums/percussion, Bertram Burkert – guitar. The album KUPALA was created in collaboration with Swiss drummer Julian Sartorius, Ukrainian poet Tanja Maljartschuk, and Tomáš Kašpar. Some of the compositions can also be heard in the documentary film “Life After Bucha” by Mila Teshaieva and Marcus Lenz. The film was awarded the German Grimme Prize in 2023.

In 2020, GANNA collaborated with Kurt Rosenwinkel, Louis Cole, Michael League, Pedro Martins, and Daniel Santiago on the project “Heartcore for Ukraine” by Kurt Rosenwinkel and Michaela Bóková’s label Heartcore Records. In August 2020, Double Moon Records and JazzThing Next Generation released her debut album “Dykyi Lys” (“Wild Fox” in Ukrainian), which received great acclaim from the international music press.

Solo, in a quintet, as a sidewoman, and as a lecturer in jazz and improvised voice, GANNA tours regularly in Germany, Sweden, France, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, Greece, Poland, Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, and other countries. In 2019, GANNA completed her jazz studies at the Franz Liszt University of Music in Weimar, where she studied with Michael Schiefel, Jeff Cascaro, and Frank Möbus.
